7.  Fresh fruit or herbs are replacing the more traditional toppers.

8.    Incorporating texture/elements of the wedding dress into the cake design.

9.  Buttercream only cakes seem to be back in vogue.  Past years have seen buttercream hidden under the fondant but this year there is a definite trend towards the more “real” look of buttercream.  This type of icing is also less expensive than rolled fondant.

2010 Wedding Cake Trends

Today I would like to share with you five of the top ten wedding cake trends for this year!  Hope you find it helpful!  Check back for the rest of the top ten in a subsequent post.

1)  Fondant Covered Cakes – Still popular.  Although many appreciate the look of fondant, many don’t like the taste.  Remember, flavourings can be added to fondant to make it taste more like candy.  Cherry, mint and passion fruit are just a few that are available and can be a nice compliment to your cake, frosting and/or filling choices.

2)  Cupcakes/Petit Fours – These can be arranged on a stand to have a stacked look like a tiered cake would.  They can be a more economical yet beautiful choice and are perfect for less formal weddings.

3)  Cakes accented with black or bright colours such as orange, hot pink, chartreuse.

4)  Tall Cakes – In past years, we have seen two and three tiered cakes but are seeing five to seven tiers a hot trend for 2010.

5)  Blue is the hot overall colour for 2010.

Snow, Snow and More Snow!!

Good Morning!

Well, it’s snowing again in Eastern Canada!  Today has already been quite a mixed bag and supposedly going to get worse this afternoon.  I am tiring of winter, and getting the blues so I jumped on the treadmill this morning for the first time in a very long time in an effort to increase energy, get some of those feel-good endorphins going and maybe shed a few pounds in the process!  It felt GREAT!  I started out easy with 20 minutes, ranging between 2 and 4 incline.

After my workout, I had a yummy sandwich.

Tuna on Vitality 14 grain bread, with a whole plum tomato :)   YUMMY!  The tuna was a new kind called Lemon and Pepper and it was just delish!  It had soya oil so it was very moist and didn’t need much in the way of condiments added.  I did add a bit of mayo (and feeling a touch guilty) but come on, I really am trying to clean up my eating and I have to allow myself a few guilty pleasures.

So I’m headed off for a shower, then a little cleaning and laundry before the weekend gets here.  Hope you all have a fantastic weekend and get to stay inside where it’s warm and safe for the rest of today :)

Request for Suggestions and T-Shirt Giveaway!

Hello!

Wow!  It’s been too long!  Since my last post, a few things have happened with Bella and personally…..some good, some bad.  I’ll get the bad out of the way first.  My beloved oldest cat, Gracie passed away VERY unexpectedly on February 1, 2010.  She had renal failure.  Looking back I know there were symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, increased water intake…..but I always had an explanation of what it could be.  Something else that seemed to make more sense.  She was still eating well, played, was her usual cute self until a couple of days before she was diagnosed.  So that’s that.  I am dealing, but I really thought of her as my little girl, and it’s going to take awhile to really get over the loss.  Maybe I never will fully get over it.  But I know it will get easier.  My other cat, George has coped better than I expected.  But we have had a few difficult nights recently.  He is lonely at night and keeps us up with his incessant meowing…..even when we let him sleep with us.  I think he just misses his cuddle buddy but in time he will heal too, I am sure.  If anyone has any suggestions on how to make it easier for a pet left behind to cope with the loss, PLEASE let me know!  You can respond to this post, or send me a private email to Shannon@BellaBakedGoods.com.

So on to some of the goods things that have been happening…….I am in the process of adding a shopping cart to the website.  This will make it easier for all of you to place your orders for both merchandise and baked goods!  Shipping can be calculated immediately in the shopping cart and will be via Canada Post instead of Purolator as I had previously announced.  Rates seem to be better, so savings for you!

Another good thing……….the latest 3D cake created by Bella Baked Goods.  It is not yet posted to the website so you are getting the premiere viewing of it :)

It was a smashing success at the Baby Shower according to Victoria of Live, Love, Laugh Event Planning and Consulting.  I am so glad, Victoria!  Congrats to you and your husband!  I was pleased to be a part of such a special event in your lives :)

T-shirts are in!  They can be viewed on the website……they come in chocolate brown and bella pink.  They are very good quality and very pretty!  Make sure to place your order soon, spring is just around the corner and these t-shirts would look fabulous with jeans, shorts.  I am looking into adding more merchandise to the line and would LOVE it if you folks would let me know what type of swag you’d like to see offered by Bella Baked Goods!

I have also had the opportunity over the past several weeks to think about the blog and have decided to take a new direction with it.  I would like to have more baking education, recipes, possibly even cooking stuff……since I love that aspect of the culinary world as well!  I have gained alot of knowledge over many years of experimenting, reading, watching TV programs and would love to share that with you.  If you have particular items you would like to see discussed here or questions about some aspect of baking/cooking please reply to this post.  I am always looking for new material to talk about on the blog!!!

The last item I want to put out there is that I would be very interested in helping to promote other baking/cooking blogs and sites so if you own a site and/or blog and have a product or item such as a cool kitchen gadget you would like me to review on my blog, please contact me.

Can’t wait to hear from you with your great suggestions for topics, merchandise, etc.  To show my appreciation, I am holding a draw for a Bella  T-Shirt (your choice of colour) on March 31st!  Each comment you submit will get you entered in the draw!  Good luck!

Love Stories, Love Thoughts, What Your Significant Other Means to You

Hey All,

With Valentines Day fast approaching and wedding orders coming in fast and furious, I have been thinking alot about love lately! I thought I’d share my thoughts on love/shout out to hubby with all of you and maybe in return, a few of you will be kind enough to share yours with me! I find in a world where there is so much pain, suffering and negativity, it’s nice to hear about love once in a while :)

I met Colin at the absolute perfect time in my life via a blind date! (thanks Danielle!) It was during my separation/divorce from husband #1 actually. I had alot of rough edges and open emotional wounds from that experience and needed someone who would see the good things in me, appreciate the love I had to give, support me like I had never been supported before and above all, be patient with me and my “baggage”. Colin is all of these things and more. He is the kindest person I have ever met. He is loving and patient and always cheery. A nice complement to my rather serious, melancholy personality. Because of his encouragement and support, I have been able to blossom to a point I have been confident enough to pursue owning my own business. I consider myself truly blessed to have a husband who is my very best friend and biggest supporter. Thank you for being who you are, Colin :) . Happy Valentines Day! Je t’aime!

I would love to hear your love stories/thoughts/shouts out to your significant other. Not just the circumstances under which you met, but also what that person means to you, how they changed your life and how they add to it.

On that note, I think I’ll call it a day and head off for some much needed sleep :) . I look forward to hearing from you!

Bakefully Yours,
Shannon

Cake Pops or Sugar Bombs as I like to call them!

Hey All!

Well it’s been a few days since my last post…….sorry.  I really need to get more organized!  I am looking for suggestions on how to get more organized!  What do you do to keep your hectic schedule on track?  Do you use a computerized calendar?  An old fashioned dayplanner that you handwrite your schedule in?  Send me your suggestions and be entered in a draw for one dozen of my new product……..Sugar Bombs!  I will make the draw on Friday, January 12th at 9 o’clock AST.

These are the perfect thing for your Valentine sweetheart.  Tell all your friends!  It’s something different, fun, portable and DELICIOUS!  Each Sugar Bomb is comprised of cake, icing and candy coating…..all in a neat little golf sized (two bite) ball.  They are absolutely adorable and kids will LOVE them.  Kids generally like anything on a stick with any sort of reference to sugar, lollipops, or cake :)    You can customize them to suit your taste, picking a cake flavour, an icing flavour and a candy coating flavour AND colour.  I made some all vanilla today and boy, are they delectable.  The candy coating keeps the cake moist and flavourful for a longer period than a regular iced cake.

Sugar Bombs!

Besides seeking your sage advice on organization, and introducing my brand new product, I wanted to introduce you to my youngest “child”, George.  I mentioned him in my previous post and thought I shouldn’t keep you eagerly awaiting any longer……so without further ado, here he is :)   I’m sure he’ll gain more of a following than I!  He is soooooo sweet.

George!

I have never ever met a cat so loving and who thinks he is human as much as George does.  They told me that at the shelter where I got him almost ten years ago and I never could have imagined how accurate their assessment of him would be.

Please respond with suggestions for my organizational issues and remember your entry qualifies you to win some of my YUMMY creations!  Hubby, in response to your question…..you can comment but you are not eligible to win.  HaHa!  I’ll make you something nice for Valentines Day!

 Bakefully Yours,

Shannon

New Item on the Menu & My Cat

Hey!

Happy Friday! Whew, I’m glad the week is over. It’s been a long one…..working in the office all week getting caught up on paperwork that should have been done long ago!! I think I may have a small procrastination problem…..but I seem to do my best work under pressure!!

Well I thought I’d let you know that I’m going to be introducing a new item within the next couple weeks. They are perfect for on the go snacks, kids birthday parties, for your sweetheart on Valentines Day, etc. They are pretty, portable and delicious. So stay tuned!!!

I want to also introduce you to one of my little sidekicks, Gracie. She’s my oldest cat, a total diva :) . She’s 11. She’s spoiled rotten and walks around here like she owns the place. She loves lettuce, strawberries, ice cream and even some of my baked goods, most especially lemon bread! Strange cat……anyway she’s a big part of our family and we sure love her :) .

I will introduce my other little friend George in my next post. Hope you’ll come back to meet him!

Feeling a Little Mushy & Finding My Authentic Self

Hey!

Today I am stuck in my office working and with it being a new year and all, it got me thinking over everything that’s happened in the past year and feeling a little emotional.  So……I thought I’d share some of my thoughts and feelings with you.  If it is inspirational in any way, that’s great!!  If not, well hopefully it’s at least somewhat entertaining for you.

You know those little sayings people often use without really thinking about the meaning behind them?  Like, “What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger”, “Good things happen to good people”, and “Do what you love and the rest will follow”?  Well I’m here to tell you they are all true!  My journey here – to this blog, website and entrepreneurial endeavour – hasn’t been easy.  It began last spring when I was unexpectedly laid off from my accounting  job of nearly eight years.  I thought that there was no better time than the present to make my dream of owning my own business, particularly a bakery, become a reality.

I say this all started to come together last year but actually……… it’s been several years in the making…..let me fill you in on what led me here.  The past five years have been filled with divorce, finding love again, getting remarried, ALOT of changes in the company I was working for, and all the while through these experiences, growing, maturing, figuring out my authentic self.  Oh, AND hitting my mid-thirties!  I realized that I was a round peg trying to fit into a square hole (or is that a square peg trying to fit into a round hole?) both at work and in my personal life.  I also realized how fleeting life is and how the life you’ve built for yourself can come crashing down around you in a flash.  If I truly wanted to be happy, I needed to call my own shots, march to the beat of my own drum.  Do something creative.  So I took a short leave of absence from my job (two years ago) and the idea for Bella was born.

After returning to work and being miserable for another nine months or so, I was laid off.  I wasn’t expecting it but looking back I am SO GLAD it happened.  Being the cautious, responsible type I know I wouldn’t have left on my own.  I needed to have the decision made for me.  So, thank you to my former boss for making that happen.  You did me a BIG favour…….really you did!  This concludes the “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” part of my talk :)   On with the show…..

So armed with a business degree, some accounting experience, alot of drive and determination (and naivety), I set out to make my little bakery a reality.  With alot of hard work, meetings with the bank, the Health Dept, and some other organizations that help entrepreneurs get up and running, I had a fully licensed bakery in my home and was baking up “Cake Art” as I lovingly refer to it.  This was in the span of about seven months.  It has by far been the hardest thing I have ever done but also the most rewarding.  I don’t have children but I think it’s alot like having a baby.  You create it, you nurture it, you stay up late with it, you care so much about it…..you just want it to be successful.  It’s a part of you.  A piece of your heart, out there for all the world to see and know and hopefully it will somehow enrich someone’s life in some way.  I truly pinch myself most days because it’s so hard to believe that my vision of Bella Baked Goods is becoming reality.  That I am lucky enough to work from my home every day on my own schedule.  That I get to work with my husband on exciting projects.  That my work is rewarding and meaningful.  I have the privilege of being part of my clients’ most treasured celebrations.  I get to create things every day AND bake every day!  My two passions in life are now what I do for a living……I gotta tell you, I have never been more peaceful, more sure that what I am doing is the right thing for me.  I sleep like a baby every night and wake up feeling rested.  Something unheard of back in my accounting days.  I truly believe that good things happen to good people – provided you are willing to make the effort to bring those good things within reach and be open to your imagination and dreams :)   I also believe that if you do what you love, the peace, happiness, and yes even money will follow.  It’s a law of nature.

So there you go.  My story.  Or at least a part of it.  I hope it entertained you somewhat.  Maybe even inspired you to take a leap of faith and live your authentic life.  There really is nothing better than that :)

Oh, and please feel free to send along comments…..and even share your story of making a dream come true or finding your authentic self!
